Power Dynamics

Something our team has been learning and talking about is power dynamics.  It wasn't something Paul or I had thought about really until our recent MTL training.  The most likely reason it never crossed our minds is that we are white Americans and have been given much power and privilege.  This is not the case, however, for the marginalized students and staff that we work with.  This creates an interesting dynamic in leading that we need to continue to become aware of.  Because of the power we've been given in our society and the power that has been stripped from others, we have to work extra hard to make sure we use our power wisely to empower and lift up those who need to gain a voice.  It's about following the example of Christ, who laid aside his rights in order to lift us up to be given all the privileges that are His as Son.  Will we ignore or deny the power we've been given, protect it so that we maintain a place above others, or will we humble ourselves in order to lift others up?  There is much to this topic and how it affects our day-to-day lives, but here is a related video that our teammate Sandy Ovalle shared with us.  I would love to hear your thoughts.

This is a great video that Kristy shared with us. Glad y'all have been talking about it as a team. I think we're still learning what this looks like for us. It's like we have the language now to describe the dynamic, but still don't know how to live it out.
