Raising up a generation of Latino and Hispanic leaders to change the world
Destino is Campus Crusade for Christ’s ministry to Latino and Hispanic college students. It was born out of a dire need to involve a rapidly growing and neglected segment of our community.
What we have learned from working with Latino students at UCLA and USC is that, although many of them were raised with some religious background, very few of them are experiencing a personal relationship with Jesus. Moreover, those that are seeking to deepen their relationship with God do not feel comfortable getting involved with campus fellowships because they are predominately non-Latino.
There are 2.3 million Hispanic-American college students in the U.S. To their parents, their Spanish isn’t good enough. They’re not Mexican or Dominican or Honduran enough. And to their peers at school, they’re not American enough. Their English isn’t good enough. They speak with an accent and they don’t quite fit in. But God made them this way for a reason. God will use their bi-cultural and bi-lingual experience to reach the nations for Christ. They have a unique and strategic role in God’s redemptive plan. Think about this…right now 1 in 4 kindergartners are Latino and 90% of them were born here. They’re not going anywhere. In 30 years, the U.S. will be nearly 1/3 Hispanic. In the next 5 years, there will roughly be a 10% increase of non-Hispanic 18 year olds, but a nearly 80% increase of Hispanic 18 year olds in America. God is building a movement to win them to Christ, build them in their faith and mobilize them to reach the nations.
We believe that a ministry like Destino can uniquely minister to Latino students, equip them to follow Jesus for a lifetime, and show them how to lead others to follow Jesus as well.
L.A. is home to nearly one fifth of the country’s Latino population. Our dream is that Latino students from Los Angeles could graduate from college and be sent to their communities and other nations around the world as servants of Christ.
