Joining the Community

If we want to reach Latino students on campus, we need to be where they are.  It's not about just gathering a few Christian students.  We have to become a part of the community that already exists.  This is especially important in Latino communities.  Trust and relationship are key if you want to have any influence.  One strategic way to do this is through existing Latino organizations on campus.  This semester, we have been trying to connect to a couple of those groups.  Paul has been attending meetings for the Latino Business Student Association and has begun to build some relationships there.  A few weeks ago he met a student named Jennifer and told her about Destino.  She seemed excited about it, so he got her phone number so he could let her know about upcoming events.  The very next day was our weekly meeting on campus.  Just before it started, Paul remembered to send her a text to invite her to the meeting.  She actually showed up and has been coming regularly this semester.  It may not seem like much, but that is one more student who has a completely new sphere of influence.  If Jennifer can catch the vision of making disciples, who knows how many more can hear the gospel as a result!
